HX Expeditions is significantly expanding its kayaking and camping offerings in Antarctica for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Beginning in October, the company will boost kayaking availability by 188% and double the number of camping slots, accommodating up to 60 guests each night.

The initiative remains rooted in environmental responsibility, with all activities conducted under the guidelines set by the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), of which HX is a founding member.

“We’re not just adding more spots, we’re reimagining how guests experience Antarctica,” said Karin Strand, VP of expeditions development at HX.

“With expanded kayaking and camping capacity, plus greater flexibility and access, we’re opening the polar regions to more adventurers than ever before. It’s about making these once-in-a-lifetime moments available to everyone on board, while delivering them in small, intimate and responsible groups,” Strand added.

New elements introduced for the 2025-26 Antarctic season include:

  • Solo participation in both kayaking and camping, with no need for a partner.
  • Discovery Kayaks: lightweight, inflatable kayaks designed for solo paddling without requiring English language proficiency.
  • Bivvy Bag camping: a minimalist, eco-conscious overnight option beneath the open Antarctic sky.
  • Expanded adventure lineup, now featuring two types of kayaking and camping, along with snowshoeing, the polar plunge, and longer hikes.

HX is offering two kayaking formats this season:

Discovery Kayaks (Inflatable)

These self-guided, solo inflatable kayaks provide a lightweight design ideal for close-to-water exploration. Perfect for calm waters, guests paddle at their own pace within a designated area, monitored by safety support boats. No English language skills are necessary, and solo travelers are welcome.

Sea Explorer Kayaks (Hard Shell)

Guided by two expert expedition leaders, these traditional hard-shell kayaks are engineered for longer trips and better performance in shifting Antarctic conditions. These tandem kayaks are designed for endurance, stability, and precision.

To enhance guest experience and adapt to unpredictable weather, all kayaking and camping reservations will be handled onboard by the expedition team, allowing flexible scheduling based on real-time conditions and preferences.

Most sailings will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. HX is currently developing a pre-booking system for future seasons. As always, all activities are subject to weather conditions.
