The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), the state-owned carrier, is partnering with the country’s leading refiners to expand India’s MR tanker fleet, supporting New Delhi’s push for stronger energy and maritime security.

According to the Economic Times, SCI will establish a joint venture with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. The partnership will oversee tenders for up to ten newbuild tankers to be built at domestic shipyards.

The initiative highlights the government’s dual goal of cutting dependence on foreign vessels while boosting India’s shipbuilding industry.

Additional details on the new orders are expected once the joint venture structure is finalized.
