Kalmar and APM Terminals Partner on Terminal Automation

Kalmar and APM Terminals have entered into a strategic partnership to advance the development and rollout of the Kalmar One automation platform at container terminals worldwide.

Under the agreement, APM Terminals will contribute its operational experience and technological expertise to the continued development of Kalmar’s automation software. Together, the companies will shape the platform’s future roadmap to better meet the demands of real-world terminal operations.

The collaboration will also extend to implementing the system at both current and future automated container terminals.

As part of the partnership, Kalmar and APM Terminals plan to create an Automation as a Service offering. This service-based model will combine automation software, terminal equipment, and operational know-how into a single commercial solution.

Kalmar One is designed to control and optimize automated container-handling operations, including automated straddle carriers and other horizontal transport vehicles. The platform is already in use at APM Terminals’ Pier 400 terminal in Los Angeles, where Kalmar’s technology oversees automated equipment across the 507-acre container facility.

The two companies have an established history of working together, having previously collaborated on automation and electrification initiatives at both Pier 400 and APM Terminals’ Tanger Med terminal.

This new agreement represents a deeper level of cooperation, moving beyond individual equipment purchases and pilot programs by giving APM Terminals an active role in guiding the future development of Kalmar’s automation platform.

APM Terminals operates more than 60 terminals across 35 countries and handled 25.8 million container moves throughout its global network during 2025.
