Officer Lee Tae-Young of the Republic of Korea has been named the recipient of the 2025 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for his courageous actions in rescuing 12 fellow crew members after the sinking of fishing vessel 135 Geumseongho in November 2024.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council formally endorsed Lee’s selection during its 134th session in London, recognizing his remarkable leadership and self-sacrifice during the life-threatening emergency off Jeju Island.

In the early hours of November 8, 2024, the vessel abruptly capsized, leaving only the propeller visible above the waterline. As several crew members clung to the propeller and others were swept away by powerful currents, Lee acted swiftly despite having no formal training in search and rescue.

Risking his own life, Lee threw life rings to those in the water and assisted them up the rescue boat’s ladder, ensuring all others were safe before boarding last himself.

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), which nominated Lee, stated: “Lee Tae-young is a brave seafarer who risked his own life to save his colleagues. Honoring his sacrifice and dedication will go beyond the mere act of awarding a prize and it serves as a profound inspiration to all seafarers.”

It was also reported that the emotional and physical strain Lee experienced during the rescue has taken a toll on his health, but he continues to recover while serving as a source of hope and resilience to his peers.

In addition to Lee’s award, the IMO Council has recognized four individuals and groups with certificates of commendation and 18 others with letters of commendation for acts of outstanding bravery at sea.

Those being honored with certificates of commendation include:

  • Members of the Canadian Air Force, who rescued 20 crew members from a disabled cargo ship in severe weather
  • Greek mariners, who successfully averted a major oil spill in the Red Sea involving the tanker M/T Sounion
  • Japanese Coast Guard officers, who saved a crew member from a capsized tugboat
  • A U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer, who saved two lives during a tropical storm

The IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea was established to internationally recognize those who display extraordinary courage in saving lives or protecting the marine environment. Lee Tae-Young will be formally presented with the award at a ceremony at IMO Headquarters in London in November 2025.
