Passengers on Royal Caribbean’s newest vessel, Star of the Seas, experienced an unexpected moment of alarm when the ship’s emergency “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar” signal echoed across the cruise line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. on August 14, when a man accidentally slipped from the pier that connected Star of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas. According to witnesses, he had been holding his phone up to record the new ship when he lost his footing and fell into the water.

Images posted online show the man gripping a life ring tossed in by crew members. Within minutes, a rescue team on a jet ski reached him, pulled him from the water, and brought him safely back to land. While details of his condition remain unclear, reports indicate he did not sustain serious injuries.

Royal Caribbean addressed the event in a statement provided to Cruise Hive:

“A guest fell off the dock while capturing footage of the ship on his smart phone. Our team immediately picked him up via jet ski and returned him to shore.”

Star of the Seas is the second ship in Royal Caribbean’s advanced Icon class. The vessel was on a special preview sailing from Port Canaveral, Florida, while Symphony of the Seas was also at CocoCay that day, operating a week-long Bahamas voyage from Cape Liberty, New Jersey.
