Medical Evacuation Carried Out on Icon of the Seas
A medical evacuation was conducted onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas during its current Eastern Caribbean sailing after two guests suffered serious medical issues while at sea.
According to Diario Libre, the incident occurred early Monday morning as the ship was traveling through Dominican waters near Puerto Plata en route to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Both passengers, identified as women, began experiencing pulmonary complications, prompting the ship’s onboard medical team to request urgent external assistance.
Following the alert, maritime authorities initiated emergency response procedures. An interceptor vessel was deployed, and the evacuation was carried out with support from the Dominican Republic Navy and national emergency services.
The two guests were safely transferred from the ship along with a family member and taken ashore to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Medical staff assessed and treated the women for their lung-related conditions. Officials later confirmed that both responded positively to care and were released once their health improved. No additional information has been provided regarding the specific cause of their illness.
There has been no indication that the evacuation significantly impacted the ship’s schedule, and the cruise reportedly continued as planned after the operation.
