The passenger ferry Weesam Express sank while moored at a local port on October 7 amid rough weather conditions. All crew members on board escaped safely, and no pollution has been reported so far.
According to reports, the crew discovered flooding in the engine room at around 3 a.m. local time. They attempted to pump out the water, but the inflow was too great, quickly overpowering the equipment.
Efforts to refloat the vessel with the help of a tugboat were unsuccessful, and the ferry ultimately sank at approximately 5:20 a.m.
The Philippine Coast Guard, along with other local agencies, has deployed an oil boom around the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential spill.
