Port of Seattle Opens Funding for Community Projects

The Port of Seattle has opened applications for community-based organizations seeking funding for environmental projects in historically underserved neighborhoods.
The program targets areas around Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and South King County, extending to Beacon Hill, Rainier Valley, and the Duwamish Valley.
In its announcement, the port confirmed that $500,000 is available in the latest round of the South King and Port Communities Fund (previously the South King County Community Impact Fund) Environmental Improvements Program (EIP).
Eligible nonprofits—501(c)3, 501(c)6, or those with qualifying fiscal sponsors—can apply for up to $20,000 for one year or up to $60,000 for projects spanning three years. Applications must be submitted by 12 p.m. PST on October 31, 2025.
Eligible Project Types
According to the port, proposals may include:
- Habitat restoration, park improvements, and tree planting
- Environmental education programs
- Enhancements to parks and playgrounds
- Public art projects with an environmental theme
The port emphasized that these grants reflect its broader commitment to greener spaces, forest restoration, and improving quality of life in airport-area communities.
In 2024, the Port of Seattle Commission approved $14 million in funding for 2025–2029, an increase from $10 million in the previous five years. The investments have supported BIPOC-led and community-based organizations, helping address long-standing disparities.
Key Updates For 2025–2029 Funding
- Lowered matching requirement for recipients, from 3:1 to 2:1, in line with Washington state law
- Expanded eligibility to more South King County areas, plus the Duwamish Valley and Beacon Hill, identified in the Port of Seattle’s Equity Index
- Priority consideration for projects in the six cities closest to the airport
