US Coast Guard Cuts Mariner Credential Processing to Four Months

The U.S. Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center (NMC) has further reduced processing times for Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) applications, with complete applications now expected to take approximately four months as the agency continues recovering from the 2026 federal funding lapse.

The revised estimate takes effect immediately and marks another significant improvement. It follows the eight-month processing timeline announced in June and is half the original estimate of eight to 12 months issued when the NMC resumed normal operations in May after the extended shutdown.

According to the NMC, the faster processing has been made possible through expanded production efforts, overtime, surge processing, workflow improvements, and the reassignment of staff and resources to reduce the backlog created during the funding lapse. The estimated timeline does not include periods when mariners are waiting to complete examinations or provide additional requested documentation.

Although application volumes remain high, the Coast Guard said current trends show continued progress toward returning to normal processing times.

Applications will continue to be handled on a first-in, first-out basis. The Coast Guard added that expedited processing will only be considered for applications with a clearly documented national defense connection.

The agency continues to encourage mariners to submit applications early through its Application Submission Portal (ASAP) to help avoid unexpected delays. It also reminded credential holders that Merchant Mariner Credential renewals can be post-dated by up to eight months, allowing them to renew well before expiration.

In addition, the NMC advised mariners to check the expiration dates of their medical certificates before applying, noting that medical certificates may expire on a different schedule than Merchant Mariner Credentials. The agency also warned that paper applications and incomplete submissions can slow the credentialing process.

The improved timeline reflects the NMC’s ongoing recovery from the disruption caused by the 2026 funding lapse, which forced the suspension of normal operations and resulted in a backlog of more than 19,000 applications. When services resumed in May, the Coast Guard estimated processing times of eight to 12 months while working through the accumulated applications. That estimate was reduced to eight months in June before being shortened again to the current four-month target.

The Coast Guard said it remains focused on further reducing processing times while continuing to uphold the safety, security and professional standards of the U.S. merchant mariner credentialing system. Mariners are encouraged to check the NMC website for future updates as operations continue to stabilize.
