A Bangladeshi online news outlet has reported that the general cargo ship Shejyoti, flying the Bangladeshi flag, built in 2001 and managed by PNN Shipping Lines, was attacked by armed assailants at Mongla Port, Bangladesh, on May 26.

The robbery took place in the Base Creek section of the Pussur River while the ship was immobilized due to mechanical issues it had been facing since June 2024.

According to reports, a gang of fourteen armed individuals approached the vessel using a fishing trawler. Once aboard, they restrained all seven crew members, including the chief officer.

Over a span of roughly two hours, the intruders ransacked the ship, stealing vital equipment, fuel, food rations, and personal items such as mobile phones. The estimated value of the stolen goods is around Tk 50 lakh (approximately USD 45,500).

Three crew members sustained injuries during the ordeal and were treated onboard.

Following the incident, a formal report was lodged, prompting the Bangladesh Coast Guard to begin a recovery and investigation operation to track down the perpetrators and retrieve the stolen property. The Mongla Port Authority is also conducting an inquiry into the event.
