The Brazilian government has given the green light to a $175 million private investment aimed at expanding and modernizing the Rio Brasil Terminal at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI). The project is expected to be carried out between 2025 and 2029.

Of the total investment, $76.48 million will support infrastructure upgrades, while $98.46 million will be used to acquire new equipment. Once completed, the expansion will boost the terminal’s annual throughput capacity by 70.5 percent, increasing it from 440,000 TEUs to 750,000 TEUs.

Planned enhancements include consolidating and enlarging container storage areas, reorganizing yard layouts to improve traffic flow, adding modern handling equipment, upgrading utility systems and digital technologies such as automation, and ensuring full compliance with the standards set by the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service.

With these improvements, the terminal will be capable of serving larger ships up to 366 meters long, allowing them to berth without restrictions and improving overall efficiency in handling next-generation container vessels.
