CMA CGM and infrastructure investment firm Stonepeak have finalized the creation of United Ports, a joint venture that brings together nine container terminals across five countries.

Under the agreement, Stonepeak has invested $2.4 billion to acquire a 25% stake in the venture, while CMA CGM retains the remaining 75% ownership and continues to oversee all operational activities.

The initial terminal portfolio includes Fenix Marine Services in Los Angeles, Port Liberty terminals in New York and Bayonne, Santos Brasil, CSP Valencia, CSP Bilbao, TTI Algeciras, Kaohsiung Terminal, and Gemalink in Vietnam.

CMA CGM’s interest in India’s Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal will also become part of the joint venture once all necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained.

United Ports plans to invest in expanding terminal capacity while upgrading cargo-handling equipment, rail and inland transport links, electrification projects, and shore power infrastructure across its facilities.

Stonepeak also has the option to invest an additional $3.6 billion in future port projects alongside CMA CGM, which would increase its total potential commitment to $6 billion.

The deal provides CMA CGM with additional capital to support the growth of its global terminal network while allowing the company to maintain control of key strategic gateways that serve its shipping operations.
