A crew member aboard a TUI Cruises vessel required an emergency medical evacuation shortly after the ship departed from Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Maritime Rescue services responded on Friday night after being alerted that a crew member onboard Mein Schiff Relax needed urgent medical care ashore. The ship had only recently left port when the onboard doctor determined that the condition required immediate hospital treatment that could not be provided safely at sea.

Spain’s Maritime Rescue agency subsequently deployed the rescue vessel SalvamarTenerife to intercept the cruise ship. Rescue teams carried out the operation successfully, transferring the crew member from the vessel to the rescue craft.

The individual was then taken back to shore, where the Canary Islands Emergency Service was standing by to provide further medical assistance and transport the patient to a hospital for urgent treatment.

No information has been released regarding the crew member’s nationality, role onboard, or the specific nature of the medical emergency.
