Holland America Unveils Coasters from Recycled Carpet

Holland America Line has introduced a new retail product: a set of four coasters crafted from repurposed carpet once installed aboard several of its ships.
Created in collaboration with Danish carpet maker Dansk Wilton, the company noted in a press release that this marks the first time a cruise line has offered recycled carpet products for sale.
The coasters, sold exclusively in onboard shops, are designed to highlight the brand’s efforts to recycle waste materials.
“This project reflects our ongoing journey toward more sustainable practices,” said My Nguyen, director of interior design at Holland America Line.
“These coasters are a tangible example of how discarded resources can be given a second life in the very environment they came from. We are proud to be the first in the industry to partner with Dansk and innovate carpet waste into beautiful usable products that our guests can enjoy,” Nguyen added.
To date, 12,000 coasters have been produced from 3,300 pounds of discarded carpet collected during dry-dock renovations on the Oosterdam, Eurodam, and Nieuw Amsterdam over the past two years.
The pieces are made using Dansk Wilton’s ReBond material, the same sustainable textile featured in the cruise line’s architectural signage.
This initiative is part of Dansk’s Re:Shape program, which focuses on redesigning carpet waste into new and practical products. Future items under consideration include notebooks, postcards, “do not disturb” signs, wall art, and other onboard retail products made from Holland America’s upcycled carpets.
The coasters are expected to be stocked across all ships’ retail shops by the end of October 2025.
