Madeira Students Explore Careers During Marella Ship Visit

Students from Instituto Superior de Administração e Línguas (ISAL) were recently given a unique onboard experience aboard Marella Explorer, thanks to a collaboration between Marella Cruises and the Ports of Madeira.
The initiative aimed to provide Tourism and Business Management students with hands-on insights into the cruise industry and expose them to the wide variety of career options available in the sector.
Around twenty students participated in the visit, which included guided access to key operational areas of the ship. Highlights of the tour included time spent with the ship’s captain, a behind-the-scenes look at the engine control room, and the chance to enjoy lunch onboard as part of the immersive experience.
The visit kicked off with a welcome speech from Paula Cabaço, President of the Madeira Ports Administration (APRAM), who underlined the organization’s goal of building stronger connections between the cruise industry and the local community.
“Cruise ships are essentially floating cities,” Cabaço explained, "offering a diverse range of skilled professional roles, spanning from tourism management and engineering to entertainment, information technology, maritime operations, and healthcare."
Olivia Wells, Sustainability Manager at Marella Cruises, added: "We’re delighted to partner with the Ports of Madeira for this educational experience. Inviting local students aboard Marella Explorer to explore operational aspects and career opportunities in cruising is invaluable. We look forward to continuing such meaningful engagements in Madeira."
Agência Ferraz, Marella Cruises’ regional representative, played a key role in organizing and facilitating the event. According to APRAM, similar educational opportunities are already being planned.
"We are already working with Marella Cruises and other cruise lines on future community engagement projects to deepen ties between Madeira's residents and the cruise industry," Cabaço concluded.
