Port of Long Beach Launches Children’s Environmental Book
The Port of Long Beach has introduced a new children’s book titled Soleil the Sea Lion Explores the Green Port. The book was written by the port’s media relations manager, Art Marroquin, and illustrated by Michelle Dinh, an artist based in San Jose.
The release coincided with Read Across America Week and was celebrated during a school assembly at Birney Elementary School in Long Beach. During the event, each student received a copy of the book.
The story centers on Soleil, an inquisitive sea lion who enjoys living in the harbor but hopes to meet more ocean friends. As the port continues efforts to improve air and water quality and restore natural habitats, the harbor becomes a healthier environment that attracts more marine life. Through Soleil’s experiences, young readers learn about caring for the environment and the value of friendship.
“The port of Long Beach has shared its story of environmental progress for more than 20 years, but there wasn’t anything readily available for children to learn about the port’s commitment to clean air, clean water and habitat restoration,” Marroquin told media.
Marroquin explained that sea lions are widely loved, which inspired him to tell the story from Soleil’s perspective as she looks for other sea creature companions, with some assistance from people working at the port.
For now, copies of the book are being distributed only at port-related events and to elementary school libraries within the Long Beach Unified School District. The port said more ways to access the book will be announced in the future.
