MSC Launches Aqua Initiative to Cut Plastic Bottles

MSC Cruises has unveiled a new onboard drinking water filtration system as part of its Aqua by MSC initiative, continuing efforts to reduce single-use plastics across its fleet.
The system, first introduced on the MSC World Europa, filters seawater and enriches it with minerals to produce drinking water. The technology was developed in partnership with ClaroSwiss, a China-based water filtration company.
“As part of MSC Cruises’ ongoing commitment to sustainability, we are working to reduce the use of plastic onboard by replacing many single-use items with sustainable alternatives; examples include plastic straws and shopping bags,” the company said.
“One of the latest steps in this journey is the phasing out of plastic water bottles. In their place, we are proud to introduce our newest initiative: Aqua by MSC.”
MSC explained that Aqua water is fortified with essential minerals such as magnesium and potassium, offering what it calls a “crisp, refreshing taste.” The project will be expanded fleetwide after its debut on the World Europa, where it is expected to replace over 24,000 plastic bottles every month.
Guests with beverage packages will enjoy unlimited still or sparkling Aqua by MSC. The water will also be available for purchase for passengers without packages.
Distribution will vary by venue: by-the-glass at bars and lounges, in reusable branded bottles at main restaurants, and via refill stations throughout the ships. Reusable MSC flasks will be sold onboard, though guests may also refill their own bottles.
Passengers on the Premium Extra beverage package will have a choice of glass-bottled or canned water, while in the Yacht Club suites, premium mineral water in glass bottles will continue to be served.
