NorwegianJewel has reached an important milestone for Philadelphia, becoming the first cruise ship in many years to both arrive and depart from the city as operations resume at the PhilaPort Cruise Port.

The vessel docked early in the morning along the Delaware River. Passengers from its previous journey disembarked before close to 2,000 new travelers came aboard for a voyage to Bermuda. This departure marks the long-anticipated return of regular cruise activity to Philadelphia, bringing an end to a break that has lasted more than a decade.

For Norwegian Cruise Line, the occasion represents a return to a port it has not used in 17 years. Company representatives described the restart as a significant step, pointing to renewed confidence in Philadelphia as a cruise destination and a convenient departure point for regional passengers.

The revival of cruise operations comes after years of work to reestablish the city as a cruise port. Local authorities believe the move will support tourism and the broader economy, with thousands of travelers expected to pass through the terminal and spend money at nearby businesses, restaurants, and hotels.

The existing PhilaPort terminal is only part of the plan. A new, updated cruise facility is already in development and is expected to open in the coming months, with the goal of welcoming more ships and strengthening Philadelphia’s position in the cruise sector.
