PSA Invests in Major Deepwater Port Expansion in Vietnam

PSA Vietnam has entered into an agreement to invest in Lach Huyen Port Investment Joint Stock Company, partnering to develop and operate four deepwater container berths at Lach Huyen Port in Haiphong.

The project, which is being developed alongside Lach Huyen International Logistics & Industrial Park, will have the capacity to handle up to 4.5 million TEU annually once all phases are complete. The expansion is expected to strengthen northern Vietnam’s position as a key gateway for global container shipping.

Construction of the first two berths is scheduled to begin at the end of 2026, with completion expected in 2028. The remaining two berths will be developed during a second phase, with the entire project targeted for completion by 2035.

PSA said the investment aligns with its “node to network” strategy, which focuses on connecting ports, inland logistics infrastructure, and supply chain ecosystems throughout its international network.

The Lach Huyen project will complement PSA’s existing operations in northern Vietnam, including its inland container depot facilities in Bac Ninh. Together, these assets are intended to establish an integrated logistics corridor linking inland cargo hubs with deepwater shipping services.

Nelson Quek, Regional Chief Executive for Southeast Asia at PSA International, said Vietnam remains one of the fastest-growing economies in the region and that the investment demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to the country.

Nguyen Vinh Hau, General Director of LHF, said the collaboration combines PSA’s international expertise in port operations with local market knowledge and the strategic benefits offered by Haiphong City’s Free Trade Zone.

The investment is the latest step in Vietnam’s ongoing port expansion, driven by manufacturers diversifying supply chains across Southeast Asia and shipping lines seeking additional deepwater capacity close to the country’s northern industrial centers.
