Virgin Voyages Pays Tribute to Joan Templeman After Her Passing
Virgin Voyages has issued a heartfelt tribute following the death of Joan Templeman, the much-loved wife of Virgin Group founder Richard Branson. Joan, often described as the quiet strength behind one of the world’s most recognizable business empires, passed away at age 80.
Richard Branson shared the news through an emotional message on social media and on Virgin’s website. He said he was “heartbroken,” calling Joan his “most wonderful companion, friend, mother, and grandmother we could ever have wished for.” Branson reflected on their more than 50 years together, remembering how he fell “in love at first sight” when she worked in an antiques shop and admiring the “down-to-earth Scottish woman who would never be impressed by my usual antics.”
Despite Branson’s wide-ranging ventures in aviation, space and communications, he credited Joan as the grounding presence in his life.
After Branson’s announcement, Virgin Voyages released its own message honoring Joan and acknowledging her meaningful connection to the cruise line and its crew:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Joan, the beloved wife of Richard Branson, a devoted partner, mother, grandmum, and radiant source of light. Across the Virgin family, her kindness, grace, and generous spirit left an indelible mark.”
The company noted that Joan had visited Virgin Voyages ships and made a lasting impression on crew members, treating them “like family.” According to the cruise line, she embodied the spirit of the Virgin brand — joyful, humble and sincerely compassionate. Crew described her as gracious and uplifting, someone genuinely interested in the people working behind the scenes.
“Her care for our crew and the way she uplifted those behind the scenes perfectly mirrored the adventurous, compassionate, and human spirit we strive to champion at Virgin Voyages,” the statement read.
Virgin Voyages extended its sympathies to Richard; their children, Sam and Holly; and the entire Branson family, including Joan’s cherished grandchildren.
