Mein Schiff 4 Operating With Minimal Crew in Abu Dhabi
TUI Cruises has significantly reduced the crew onboard Mein Schiff 4, which remains unable to leave Abu Dhabi due to ongoing security concerns related to the situation involving Iran.
According to German cruise news outlet Schiffe-und-kreuzfahrten, only 59 of the ship’s usual 900 crew members are currently onboard. The vessel is now operating with a minimal “skeleton crew,” focused only on essential operations. Since passengers disembarked more than two weeks ago, the ship has effectively been laid up, with normal cruise activities paused.
Essential Crew Still Onboard
Despite the reduced numbers, key personnel remain in place. The nautical and technical teams, under the command of Captain Jan Fortun, are still onboard and prepared to act once it is safe to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. However, there is no confirmed timeline for when that may be possible.
A small group of additional crew members is also maintaining critical onboard systems and supporting ongoing operations. Even while out of service, cruise ships require continuous maintenance to ensure they can return to operations without major delays.
Echoes of Past Disruptions
The current situation has drawn comparisons to the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when cruise operations worldwide were suddenly halted without clear timelines for resumption.
Uncertain Timeline Ahead
At present, Mein Schiff 4 is scheduled to resume service on May 1, 2026, with a departure from Mallorca for the “Wildcat Tattoo Cruise.” Whether this sailing will proceed as planned depends largely on how the security situation in the Persian Gulf develops in the coming weeks.
A similar situation is believed to be affecting Mein Schiff 5, which is currently docked in Doha, Qatar, although no official details about crew reductions on that vessel have been confirmed.
Challenges to Restarting Operations
With only a small fraction of its full crew onboard, bringing Mein Schiff 4 back into service may take additional time. Beyond repositioning the vessel to Europe for the summer season, TUI Cruises will also need to arrange for the return of around 900 crew members to fully staff the ship once again.
