The Port of Kolkata, also known as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, has entered into a 30-year concession agreement with JSW Infrastructure, India’s second-largest private port operator. The partnership will focus on mechanising two berths, aiming to boost the port’s efficiency in handling both cargo and containers.

The agreement, structured under the Public-Private Partnership model, will be carried out by JSW Kolkata Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd., a dedicated subsidiary created specifically for the project. Construction is expected to finish within two years, though operations are planned to begin in phases before full completion.

Valued at 740 crore rupees (approximately $84 million), the concession covers the mechanisation of berths 7 and 8 at Netaji Subhas Dock. Once completed, the modernised terminal is projected to handle 4.5 lakh TEUs annually, significantly strengthening the port’s capacity and operational efficiency.
